Nigerian Breweries launch new mobile application, ‘Star Music’

Nigerian Breweries, makers of Star Lager beer, popularly referred to as ‘the people’s beer’ or ‘Shine shine bobo’, has announced the launch of a first-of-its-kind mobile application called Star Music.
The formal launch, which held at the Civic Center, Victoria Island Lagos on February 27 2013, drew the crème of the entertainment industry as they came out en masse to witness the arrival of Star Music.
The ‘digital’ event also provided guests a first hand view of the new mobile service through a facility demonstration of the application.
Nigerian Breweries’ Marketing Director, Mr Walter Drenth, noted that Star Music is a culmination of years of careful planning and research as the company sought out ways to continually engage its consumers. “At Star, we’ve always believed that our consumers are truly at the core of our business. We are very excited by the introduction of our new mobile application and see it as one of the many ways we have chosen to positively engage music consumers in Nigeria.”
“Star Music is a two-way interactive App that will completely change the way consumers experience music from now on. We’re partnering with some of the biggest names in entertainment MTV BASE and Nigerian Entertainment Today – so users can watch videos, stream and download their favourite songs, create their own playlists, enjoy breaking news on their favourite stars while interacting and sharing the fun with each other. Of course there’ll be so much more to offer as well so consumers can always look forward to each new day with Star Music.” he added.
Star Music is available on several mobile operating systems, including Android, Java, Blackberry, iPhone, iPAD and Google Play; as well as on a dedicated mobisite.

I’m leaving Chelsea at the end of the season – Benitez

In a dramatic and shocking press conference, Rafa Benitez confirmed he will leave his post as Chelsea manager at the end of the season.
The Spaniard, was speaking after he watched the team defeat Middlesbrough 2-0 in the FA Cup fifth round, to book a place against Manchester United in the quarter-finals.
He said: “Chelsea gave me the title of interim manager which is a massive mistake. I’m the manager.
“The fans are not helping us. At the end of the season I will leave. They don’t have to worry about me.”
He went ahead to take a dig at the fans, who constantly boo and sing against him at games.
“I am a little bit disappointed with some of the fans. They have to support the team instead of wasting time singing songs,” he continued. “If they continue singing and talking, they are not doing [the team] any favours. I will do my best until the last day.
“I am a professional and I am doing my job. What I want to do is win every single game for Chelsea.”

“Sex is an act of worship, that is why people shout ‘Oh my God!’” – Femi Fani-Kayode

Fani-Kayode
Fani-Kayode

There are fewer public figures as controversial as Femi Fani-Kayode. The lawyer and former Minister of Aviation, airs his perspective on anything and everything, dividing opinions in the process.
In a post on Twitter, he wrote this concerning sex: “Sex is powerful. It is an act of worship. That is why people shout things like “oh my God” when they are at the height of orgasmic pleasure.”

Just recently, he waded into the Oscar Pistorius case, blaming his late girlfriend for the tragedy.
He said at the time: “Whatever the the truth may be, all I can say is that this is a great tragedy and we need to be careful about the kind of women that we spend our time with. Any woman that stirs up your anger and constantly provokes your wrath ought to be avoided like a plague. It is those that bring peace and tranquility into our lives that we should cherish.
I have little doubt that Pistorius, who was a great achiever, a living icon, the greatest and best known African sportsman in world history and an absolute gentleman, was provoked into a murderous rage by his pretty little lover and that she played on his insecurities and inadequacies. These are the classic traits of the biblical “strange woman”- the destroyer of men’s dreams and destinies.
Only God knows who sent this creature from the sea into this great man’s life just to destroy it. For Pistorius it is all over. In one moment of blind rage he has lost everything and he has brought shame, disgrace, sorrow and infamy upon his name and that of his family. The blood he has shed will speak against him and his lineage forever. And all because of a sexy and pretty little model who the devil sent his way.
May the Lord deliver us all from the daughters of Jezebel, Delilah, Athalia and Yemoja.”

Making it to the Top from Ground Zero…Eddy Onuzuruike

H.E HOME BOY

You often hear the expression of the self-made-man. This is the case where a man inherited little or nothing from parents or family. He may have become rich in commerce out of serving other people, most times from other ethnic zones and races. The highest academic qualification sponsored by his family may have been the FSCL certificate, and from there obtained scholarship that propelled him forward.
In these scenarios, he started from the scratch with little or no help or from ground zero for a more modern expression. The case of T.A. Orji’s Governance in Abia could be likened to these circumstances.
Abia created in 27th August 1991, had a succession of military administrators and three democratically elected governors. I will maintain a modest stance by allowing Abians to do the scoring. Obviously there was little or nothing on the ground.
Today there are giant strides that could be seen and one keeps wondering if the previous administrations had attempted half of these, Abia would have been far ahead.
This brings to mind the Ochendo legacy projects. These are projects spanning from Ukwa to Aba, Arochukwu to Umunne Ochi, Ohafia through Abam, Bende to Umuahia, transversing the three senatorial zones. Chief T.A Orji seems to be answering the question, ‘what will you I be remembered for?’
Professional groups like lawyers, auditors, architects, engineers and all from time to time hold conferences in different states and countries. International bodies like the World Bank, IMF, and UNESCO move from one city to the other and can only berth in cities and towns that have facilities that can accommodate high caliber formal occasions. This backward trend is on a fast rate of change with the construction of the International Conference Center- a commodious and imposing exotic structure, first of its kind in Abia. So it is with the new Government House, ASUBEB and ASEPA complexes all in Ogurube Layout.
The Civil Service by its nature thrives in a peculiar environment. In the state with not less than 20 ministries, over ten are housed in rented spaces. Governors have come and gone but only Ochendo has tackled the dire need with the twin, magnificent, new secretariat buildings on Ndume Otuka Road with an expressway connecting the new and old for ease of administration. The BCA radio and TV has served the state from inception, rendering the most potent voice but nobody has thought about the welfare of its officers most of the time scampering around and building temporary shelters as office blocks. Today there is a towering edifice with 48 rooms for staff and studio, adjudged the best in Nigeria by no less a person than the national chairman of RATTAWU during the Good Governance tour.
Other existing office blocks like the magistrate Courts have been in a state of great disrepair. Some have actually maintained the shape and state the colonial masters left them. It is common knowledge that some judges retire to leaky rooms and dingy chambers to write judgments. Offices are left with broken locks, tinkered windows, rotting doors to the detriment of official documents that are classified or confidential. The hitherto hallowed judge’s privacies are constantly invaded, and nobody has thought along a remedial line but today, all these are changing. The ministry of Justice is beautifully housed.  Ultramodern court complexes are near completion in Umuahia and Aba.
The health sector was thus far devastated ranging from poor service, low moral and poor infrastructure. As this piece is being read, there are over 250 primary health centers in and around the state. Abia has become a medical reference point as neighboring towns and states are streaming to Abia Diagnostic Centre, the robust partnership with Indians in Me Cure Healthcare Limited- a state of the arts diagnostic laboratory outfit. Abians don’t need to go abroad for medical checkups except they want to. Old age diseases which were death sentences now get solace in the Abia Specialist Hospitals equipped with dialysis machines in Umuahia and Aba.  Amachara Specialist Hospital and School of Nursing has a superb paediatric section. Ochendo cares for all, especially old and children. At Obuaku in Ukwa, Abia medics in the Diaspora are gearing to partner with the Government in an international hospital project living up to his avowal of being the governor of the able and healthy.
Amongst all, Ochendo is in a hurry to improve and upgrade Aba despite environmental challenges some exacerbated by the hasty lifestyles of the inhabitants. He has among other improvement frameworks taken on 16 roads, over ten are already completed which includes Ngwa Road, Azikiwe and Geometric Road. These have terminal dates for completion before the rains are back.
Is it in education the bastion of intellectual growth and development? Do we need to remind us that education is still free from primary to secondary with free busing in Umuahia and Aba.  Scholarship and bursary which took the back seat in numerous administrations are back. Just recently, he handed back some schools to the missions who are the original owners on a platter of gold reinforcing the believe that the missions are better in discipline and moral standard. Abia State University and Teaching Hospital, Abia Polytechnics in Aba, The College of Education Technical in Aruchukwu and the School of Health in Aba are funded from the State coffers. Additional are the Schools of Nursing and Midwifery in Abiriba, Aba, Umuahia and Amachara.
Can we talk about all these without employment opportunities, the cause of restiveness in the youths? There is a tremendous leap in agricultural reforms. Abia farmers were the earliest few in the country to access the federal government assisted multimillion naira loans. Fadama 111 is on full scale execution as the governor has ordered for the payment of counterpart funds at the State and Local Government levels. The ADP is fully empowered taking on the new phrase the ‘Food chain’. Policies that will change our youths to become producers instead of beggars have sprung into reality. Abia rubber has been rejuvenated and employs an appreciable number of youthful hands. The Mega farms projected for the 17 local Government Areas with the pilot scheme already sited and functional in Okeikpe, Ukwa West. The Oil Palm Estate at Ohambele Ukwa East has been injected with a new lease of live with Malaysian partners. All these will yield not than ten thousand jobs complementing the numerous youth empowerment and skill acquisition schemes previously executed.
I can go on and on in all sectors. Abia is destined for great things only if we believe. The above reform and giant administrative masterstrokes are in Abia geographical entity, tangible, verifiable and enjoyed by all. According to an Igbo adage, ‘you can only deceive the blind that there is no oil in the soup, but not for salt and pepper.’ All would not have been possible if not for the diligence, perceptive management and the people-oriented policies of Ochendo in the face of paltry monthly allocations of 3.5 billion naira, where over 75 percent are voraciously guzzled by a behemoth wage bill.
This is a new year let us do new things, ennobling and sanctifying. Any who denies all these does not know Abia well. Let us support the Governor Sir T.A. Orji and make Abia a better place for all.

Eddie Onuzuruike.

I will write more books to expose corruption in Nigeria – El-Rufai

A former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai, has vowed to roll out more inspirational and political books that will expose corruption and promote piety in public office.

The former Minister firmly and confidently disclosed that his last book, entitled ‘The Accidental Public Servant, was motivated by the need to instill transparency and honesty in governance.
Speaking at a book presentation in Lagos on Monday as organised by the Save Nigeria Group (SNG), el-Rufai, however, warned those who may have reservations about the contents of the 700-paged work to write a rejoinder, instead of trying to castigate him.
While throwing some darts at those condemning his work, he vowed to write more books cataloguing his sojourn in government, saying the present one is just a tip of the iceberg.
Pioneer Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, had in separate occasions faulted some of the details contained in the book as well as the motive of the writer.
To Ribadu, there exists what he termed a “huge integrity deficiency” in former minister’s book, stating that el-Rufai was wrong to have written about the EFCC as he knew next to nothing about its operations throughout their stint in government.
On his part, the former vice president dismissed the book as nothing more than a work of fiction, as he argued that aspects that catalogued his official dealings in government were inaccurate.
Abubakar, in a statement made available to newsmen in the wake of the allegations contained in the book, stated that el-Rufai was writing alleged fiction for self-glorification at the expense of truth.
Reacting to the barrage of criticism trailing the presentation of the book, el-Rufai stated that he had no other motive for undertaking to write the book other than the need to ensure transparency in the governance of the country.
Lamenting the spate of secrecy in government, el-Rufai said, “Governance of this country must move away from what it is. It must be open for all to see. Governance must be transparent. It is unfortunate that since I have written this book, politicians have been ascribing various motives for the move which are from what was intended.”
He however admonished youth in the country to be more involved in political matters, despite the failure of government to take care of their economic challenges.
Earlier in his speech, the chief host and Convener of the SNG, Pastor Tunde Bakare praised el-Rufai for undertaking to write the book, saying with such efforts, he has defined a workable compass for the problems plaguing the country to be solved.
“God positioned el-Rufai to be where he was at that time, so that he will later expose the workings of government. With the coming of this book, friends have become enemies, enemies have become friends. Anyway, if anybody is angry with the contents of the book, he should write his own,” Bakare stated.

PDP not threatened by APC – Governor Orji

Governor T. Orji

In his determination to remain in the People’s Democratic Party, PDP despite rumour of massive exodus of people from the ruling party, Abia State Governor, Theodore Orji has said that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was not in any way threatened by the emergence of the new mega party, All Progressives Congress, APC.
In a statement by his chief press secretary, Ugochukwu Emezue, Governor Orji hinted that the PDP remains the preferred party in Nigeria, as such, the opposition cannot diminish its influence, popularity, domination in the 2015 polls.
He appealed to Nigerians to be patient with President Goodluck Jonathan whom he said is working round the clock to transform Nigeria in all sectors of the economy, while at the same time enhancing the welfare of Nigerian women and youth.
The Governor added that Abia state will next month launch the third phase of its youth empowerment scheme in Umuahia, the state capital.

SOME OF THE CONSTRUCTED ROADS IN ABA, ABIA STATE

2015: The Battle Of TheTwo Orji’s And Abia PDP

The 2007 gubernatorial election in Abia State was mainly a fight between the PDP led by Chief Onyema Ugochukwu and the PPA, which had Chief T.A. Orji. While the PPA won the governorship elections, the PDP claimed majority of the National Assembly and some state Assembly seats. The situation however remained such that the Kalu family dictatorship was still in full ascent in the state. The power of dictatorship was exercised in a manner that gave them unlimited control over several organs of government and the party thus leaving Governor Orji very limited to exercise the mandate given to him by the Abia electorate.
The situation was made worse by a burgeoning security challenge that was threatening to collapse civic life especially in the urban centers of Aba and Umuahia. As if history was repeating itself, these contradictions were to generate a major crisis within the PPA, which saw the incumbent governor Chief T.A. Orji seeking for another platform to contest the 2011 general elections.Such contradictions equally brought the merging of the Chief T.A. Orji’s faction of the PPA with the opposition PDP, which led to the PDP sweeping all the seats in the 2011 general elections. It has to be noted too that Governor T. A. Orji’s level headedness and candour played a major role in unifying the mainstream Abia political elite behind the new PDP
The most significant of all the 2011 electoral events was the round rejection of the Kalu family dictatorship as symbolized by not only the rejection of all PPA candidates but also the eventual rejection of Chief Orji Uzor Kalu’s senatorial bid for the Abia North senatorial seat.
Over the past two years, this has guaranteed a quantum leap in governance in both quantitative and qualitative terms. At least democracy has finally been restored back to the people under the leadership of the current governor, Chief T.A. Orji and his PDP, which has a tested and self-effacing politician, Chief Emma Nwaka as its chairman. The evidence of such flourishing can be seen  from an incident that happened some few months ago in the Arochukwu Local government area chapter of the party where the local government chairmanship position became vacant and another successor in the person of Hon. Obinna Nwankwo was freely elected by a properly convened chapter of the party. There was no interference either from the state governor or the state leadership of the party.Such a situation was impossible to imagine during the Kalu family dictatorship era. In the same way the fleecing of prospective candidates and office seekersduring the Kalu family dictatorship era is now also regarded as a thing of the past.
One other evidence of such quantum leap in governance is that the elite consensus ensured by the leadership of Chief T.A. Orji has guaranteed a synergy between the state officials and federal representatives, which has ensured the attraction of all federal projects meant for Abia State. Some of such projects include, the Abriba-Nkporo-ossoedda federal highway; the rehabilitation of Ohafia-Arochukwu Federal high way; the re-opening of Osisioma NNPC Depot; the various FERMA reconstruction works in the state, the Labour Institute at Umuahia etc. This situation is in contrast to the past during the Orji Kalu family era when the bickering between the state governor and the federal representatives meant that Abia State suffered from lack of federal projects.
Again, the achievement of elite consensus has enabled the state government to concentrate efforts at pursuing its development agenda undisturbed by unnecessary political bickering and partisanship. The most notable example of such effort at development by the state administration is the execution of its legacy projects which is currently been symbolized by the numerous construction efforts that are on-going in the state.
After the defeat of the Kalu family dictatorship and their disappearance from the Abia scene, they went underground. Some said, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu has been quietly investing his billion all over the globe while also answering to EFFC charges over acts of impropriety as the then Governor of Abia State. However, those who know Orji Kalu too well will agree that his re-appearance in the Abia scene after two years of absence to make an entry into PDP while re-organizing his PPA will only have one agenda in mind and that is, to cause confusion in Abia PDP while positioning his party the PPA to achieve power in 2015.It is for this reason that such agenda will continue to be resisted not only by the leadership of the party but by all progressive minded Abians.

Made-in-Abia exhibition unveils hidden abilities

The maiden edition of the ‘Made in Abia Products Exhibition’ ended at the weekend in Umuahia, the Abia State capital. The exhibition was targeted at showcasing the ingenuity of small and medium industrialists in the state and especially Aba, its commercial hub.

Abia is known for hosting the highest number of small and medium scale industrialists in the country. Majority of the industrialists, however, operate in isolation, which prompted the government to use the exhibition to bring them to the limelight.

This is where Abia has comparative advantage over other states in the country. So, the government wants to stamp that superiority by exposing hidden treasures in the state. Nine sectors participated in the exhibition: metal and machine fabrication, leather and allied products, garment, wood works and carpentry, food and beverages, hair stylists and cosmetologists, auto mechanics and chemical and allied sartorial group.

Majority of these industrialists lack exposure, which is not good for their businesses. Now, the administration wants to bring them out through this exhibition so they can expose their talents to the public and thereby attract patronage to themselves.

The thinking is that almost every house on Ngwa Road has a factory in it, but the operators do not come out. Even as the state government has initiated this now, some of them have not seen the reason why they should be part of it. Some see it as a waste of time, but the organisers are trying to convince them, because change is constant.

Considering the importance of this sector to the economic development of the state and country, the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) in conjunction with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council and the Abia State government established a Common Facility Centre (CFC) in Aba, to provide modern machinery to aid the leather and garment producers, first of its kind in Nigeria.

The centre, which was estimated to have gulped over $300,000 is aimed at upgrading technical skills and entrepreneurial capacities of small and medium enterprises in Aba for export production through the cluster concept.

The key strategy for the project was to establish sectoral and geographical concentration of enterprises faced with common opportunities and challenges and with the primary objective of exploiting external economies through collective effort and sharing common facilities for enhanced processing of their products.

The CFC is also to serve as a centre of excellence for capacity building and provision of cutting edge technology for competitiveness enhancement. The Aba leather products cluster was identified as having the highest density in Nigeria, which consists of over 11,000 enterprises with 23,000 regular employees and an annual turnover of $100 million.

It is similar to the Export Production Village (EPV) model of the Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC), a strong justification for the NEPC’s involvement in the programme alongside other stakeholders such as the Federal Ministry of Trade & Investment, UNIDO, and the Abia State government.

To complete the project, the Abia State government, provided the land, water and electricity, the NEPC built the structure, supplied and installed two 250 KVA stand-by generators.

This development negates the expectation of the Export Promotion Council, one of the executors of the project, that Nigeria can earn N320 billion annually from leather products, if the centre is fully utilised by the leather producing cluster group in the state.

The executive director, Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), A.M Lawal, observed at the commissioning that the leather sector in 2006 contributed well over N28 billion ($230 million), representing 22 percent of the non-oil export earnings. According to him, that amount increased in 2007, as the sector contributed N37.8 billion ($300 million) to the non-export earning of Nigeria. Consequently, he further observed that Nigeria would earn more than N320 billion from finished leather products using the CFC model.

Commending the Ministry of Trade & Investment, initiators of the cluster programme, Lawal affirmed that the initiative would definitely spur industrialisation in the leather sector of Nigeria. As a stakeholder in capacity building for small and medium scale producers of exportable non-oil products in Nigeria, the NEPC was asked to support in providing the structure for the first CFC project.

The key strategy for the project was to establish sectoral and geographical concentration of enterprises faced with common opportunities and challenges and with the primary objective of exploiting external economies through collective effort and sharing common facilities for enhanced processing of their products.

The CFC is to also serve as a centre of excellence for capacity building and provision of cutting edge technology for competitiveness enhancement. It was jointly executed by Abia State government that provided land, water and electricity, the NEPC that built the structure, supplied and installed two 250 KVA stand-by generators, the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation that supplied and installed the machines, provided training and the technical expertise required for the take-off of the centre, while the Federal Ministry of Trade & Investment provided policy guidelines and coordination for the success of the project.

And Basketmouth's car as we learnt is the only one that has been ordered in Africa and that the going rate is £42,000.

Breaking News – APC Wins 2015 Election By Landslide

Like an Armored Personnel Carrier (APC), Nigeria’s All Progressives Congress, secured a landslide victory in the just concluded 2015 presidential and gubernatorial elections, over its arch-rival and incumbent party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Results made available to journalists by the country’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), showed that the APC trounced the PDP in almost every state of the Federation, and claimed the presidency, in an election marred in some parts of the country by violence, perhaps as a result of the super-charged atmosphere in the country before the general elections.
But the victory claimed by the APC did not come on a platter. Political pundits say the groundwork started much earlier, and that key players within the alliance had to make sacrifices they had never envisaged. It seemed the political elites in Nigeria, at least those under the platform of the APC, finally came to the realization that the prebendal politics that impoverishes the majority, which they had put into effect since the return of civilian government in 1999, had hit a cul-de-sac.
Nigerians saw a new paradigm, devoid of the lies they had been told by political elites for many years. Indeed, the new APC is a mish-mash of different politicians of different hue and persuasions, but perhaps the necessity of forming a formidable opposition to the behemoth PDP, kept the APC on track from day one. Many believe that the first masterstroke was in the appointment since 2013, from among the ranks of the APC, of Shadow Ministers, who benchmarked the PDP on policy issues and made known their alternative positions, as is being done in the UK.
This was a novel idea in Nigeria, but it gave the APC the needed structure, which was something the PDP claimed to be its sole advantage over the rest of Nigeria’s political parties. The PDP itself was not helped by its many internal wrangling and jostle for positions, and the many defections into the APC from within its ranks, in the buildup to the general elections. The idea of having shadow ministers, many say, had kept the APC party focused on the future, critical of the present, focused on solutions and not mere criticisms, given it a much-needed bureaucratic structure, kept its vibrant members very busy, and given Nigerians hope of a better tomorrow.
But perhaps the straw that broke the camel’s back was the selection of its flag bearers. In the beginning, the main contenders were the incorruptible Muhammadu Buhari, who had been a military ruler in the late 1980s. Also very powerful was Senator Tinubu, ex-governor of Nigeria’s commercial capital and business hub, Lagos State. But it was soon evident after forming the grand alliance, that there had come, a need to allow some of the young turks to take the fight to the incumbent party. Notable among the rare gems were Governors Fashola and Okorocha of Lagos and Imo State respectively. These two were among the best orators, they were futuristic young men who saw ahead of the pack, and who could communicate their leadership imperatives to the teeming population.
It was a great day for the party, and perhaps the nation, when the duo of Tinubu and Buhari, decided to step aside for these young men to prove their mettle. As a major political gambit, the APC ‘zoned’ its Presidential ticket to the ‘East’. In comes Mr Rochas Okorocha, maverick politician, a great mobiliser of people, articulate, and a bridge-builder, who had earlier contested for a presidential seat, many years ago under the now defeated PDP.
Okorocha had for many years engaged in philanthropy across the country and this came in handy for his political ambition. He is said to have sponsored over 10,000 Nigerian students through university education and many of these became his grassroots mobilisers. Fashola was paired with Okorocha as an able and strong Vice President in order for him to replicate the discipline, focus, revenue-drive, and governmental responsibility that he brought to bear in the all-important Lagos State in his eight years of governorship.
Still living under the shadow of its own ‘rotational presidency’ Frankenstein, the ruling PDP had no answer to this move! Some party big wigs from northern Nigeria wanted the incumbent president to make way for their ‘turn’, but President Jonathan’s core supporters would have none of that! Okorocha, great speaker, showman and maverick politician, a man ‘with a large heart’ according to many, being from the East of Nigeria, was able to deliver the votes of people from his region, who saw this as an opportunity for one of theirs to symbolically occupy Nigeria’s highest office. People believe the Christian/Muslim pairing, and the choice of an Igbo person, is very emotional and critical at this point of Nigeria’s history.
The PDP fielded the former President Jonathan, who ‘by right’, decided to contest in order to ‘complete the projects that he started’. But Nigerians wanted change, and needed to see a new face, after four harrowing years of terrorism, and a never-before-seen level of corruption in the polity, among other societal issues like armed robbery and kidnapping.
The APC has promised that poverty reduction will be a key concern, not mere wealth creation which benefits very few citizens in the country. It appears the APC has among its ranks, realistic economists, who are not interested in merely infusing foreign capital into the financial markets and off-the-shelf policies into the economy, or taking the country into another debt trap like the government it displaced. Nigeria’s debt has however become another albatross in the two final years of the PDP and should be of major concern to the new team at the helms.
The choice of Fashola as a Vice President, supported by his mentor, the consummate Bola Tinubu, ensured that a landslide victory was secured from the Western States, where they already had a stronghold. In the north, the sacrifice made by General Buhari, was equally sold to the millions of citizens, who naturally believe ‘Maigaskiya’ (the teller of truth), as he is known over there. After four years of the northern economy being totally destroyed and thousands of its people dead as a result of the dreaded Boko Haram – and many times by the equally dreaded JTF – voters in the northern part of Nigeria were ready to vote anything else but PDP.
Millions regretted the politics they were made to play by their right-wing leaders in 2011, when they voted, as it now appears, against their own enlightened self interests. Buhari was able to convince them that he is in full support of the unique presidential pair of Okorocha/Fashola. PDP won a few states in the Delta region of the country (where the ex-president is from), and some reactionary states in the North Central.
Nigerians are settling down to the news of the victory, and are hopeful of a new rhetoric from their leaders. The APC was smartly positioned as a party of unity as a result of its broad strategy and posture, leading to the elections. Nigerians hope to leapfrog in the next few months, and surmount their many developmental challenges under the leadership of the two able ‘young’ men, supported by the fathers of the nation.
Many Nigerians hope President Okorocha will provide the much required rhetoric, mobilization and motivation to the teeming millions, while VP Fashola will be the ‘techie’ guy on ground, who they believe is ready to get his hand soiled while providing the needed direction for the innovations and technological development that the country so direly requires. It seems to be a new day in Africa’s largest country… Maybe it could actually fulfill its potentials going forward.

Man, 34, Charged With Raping 3-Year Old Girl

A 34-year old man, Kehinde Paul Layode, has been arraigned before a family court in Ikeja for allegedly defiling a three-year old girl (name withheld).
The incident, which happened at 3/5, John Crescent, Igando, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, was reported at the Igando Police Station.
The accused, if found guilty, risks spending a minimum of five years in jail under the Criminal Laws of Lagos State.
According to the girl’s mother (name withheld) who spoke with P.M.NEWS correspondents, Kehinde was one of her neighbours and she left her daughter in his custody to get drugs for the girl when the man allegedly took advantage of her.
“I was going to make my hair in the salon when I discovered that my daughter’s temperature was high and I told Kehinde’s wife to help me take care of her.
But she asked me to leave her with her husband since she also wanted to make her hair and that we should go to the salon together.”
“It wasn’t up to ten minutes after I went to get the drugs for her that I returned to the house and asked Kehinde to open the door but he didn’t.
Instead, he told me that the girl was sleeping, that I shouldn’t bother myself about her. Then I asked him to at least open the door for me to see my girl and he said that he was in the bathroom.”
The girl’s mother said she was shocked when the door was eventually opened and she discovered that the girl had been defiled.
“I insisted that he opened the door. At this point, my daughter was lying down on the bed but was not sleeping. I asked him why he told a lie but he did not respond. I only observed that my girl was looking rather disturbed.
“When I opened her pant out of suspicion to check her, I saw sperm in between her thighs. I got really mad at him and asked him what happened but he went really wild and told me that he did not do anything. ‘How could I have raped her?’ he asked me and when neighbours came around, they were also as surprised as I was,” she narrated.
The doctor’s report confirmed that the girl was defiled following the tests carried out on her.
It was also alleged that the accused had pleaded with the family to settle out of court but the girl’s family insisted that they wanted justice to prevail.
When the matter was initially taken to the magistrate’s court, he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N250, 000 with a surety and the matter was adjourned till Friday, 22 February, 2013.
However, the matter was transferred to the family court. The court did not sit on 22 February and the matter was adjourned till 8 April, 2013.

SHOCKING!
Wukari Football Clash: 28 Bodies Bodies On the Street.

**a mere argument between two football supporters turn into bloody battle with deep religious sentiment, leading to the killing of some people, about 300 houses were destroyed.

Residents of Wukari in Taraba State said yesterday that they counted 28 dead bodies on the streets of the restive town following last Saturday’s bloodbath but the police confirmed only five were killed.

A House of Assembly member representing Wukari II Constituency Ishaya Gani, had on Saturday said a mere argument between two football enthusiasts snowballed into bloody battle with deep religious sentiment, leading to the killing of five people while about 300 houses were destroyed.

But Japhet Ande, a resident of Wukari, told a reporter that he counted 28 bodies on the streets hours after the incident. Already, state government has imposed 24 hours curfew on the community to forestall possible escalation of the crisis Our repoter who was in Wukari yesterday saw some of the bodies still lying on the streets even amid heavy presence of securitymen. Churches were not opened for Sunday service.

Also, securitymen have cordoned off the Zaki Biam Wukari Jalingo Road as vehicles plying the road from the Benue end were compelled to pass through Katsina-ala- Bali to Jalingo. A policeman who does not want his name in print said that the bodies were evacuated and taken to the Wukari General Hospital mortuary by securitymen on Saturday night. “Last night (Saturday), we used our Hilux vehicle to convey more than 10 corpses to the mortuary at the General Hospital and up till now, there are bodies on the streets.
We may start parking them later in the evening”, he said, a possibility that more people may have died in the crisis than the previous official confirmation.

Chairman of Wukari Local Government, Mr. Danazimi Agbo, said he “could not give the exact number of people killed,” adding “as I am speaking with you now, on (Sunday), we are still conveying bodies to the mortuary. Therefore, it is impossible for me to tell you the number of casualty.” - naija pundit.

Nigeria: Iran Denies Allegations of Organising Spy Cell

Iran denied on Friday Nigerian allegations that it had trained militants arrested in Nigeria on charges of planning attacks on U.S. and Israeli targets there.
Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said such allegations were "made up as the result of the ill will of the enemies of the two countries' good relations", Iranian state television reported.
"Iran and Nigeria have friendly and close relations and despite the vast efforts of the two countries' enemies in recent years relations and cooperations have always improved," he said.
Nigeria's secret service said on Thursday it had arrested Abdullahi Mustapha Berende and two other Nigerians in December after Berende made several suspicious trips to Iran, where he interacted with Iranians in a "high-profile terrorist network".
It said Berende and his Iranian handlers were involved in "grievous crimes" against Nigeria's national security.
Berende, who will now be charged in court, told reporters at the Nigerian secret service's headquarters on Wednesday that he had carried out surveillance for the Iranians, reports Reuters.
In 2004, Israeli sources said an Iranian diplomat was arrested on suspicion of spying on the Israeli embassy in Nigeria's capital Abuja. Tehran denied any arrest.
In 2010, authorities at a Lagos port found a hidden shipment of rockets, rifle rounds and other weapons from Iran, supposedly bound for Gambia. A Nigerian and an Iranian face criminal charges over the shipment.

Russia Accuses US of Double Standards over Syria

President Bashar al-Assad

Russian accused the United States of applying double standards over Syria on Friday and blamed Washington for blocking a U.N. Security Council statement condemning a car bomb attack in Damascus.
The car bomb killed 53 people on Thursday on a busy highway, damaging nearby Russian embassy buildings in the Syrian capital, reports Reuters.
"We are disappointed that, as a result of the United States' position at the United Nations Security Council, the terrorist act in Syria was not condemned," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told a joint news conference after talks with China's foreign minister.
"We believe this is double standards and see in it a very dangerous tendency by our American colleagues to depart from the fundamental principle of unconditional condemnation of any terrorist act, a principle which secures the unity of the international community in the fight against terrorism.
Russia has used its status as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council to protect President Bashar al-Assad from three consecutive resolutions aimed at putting pressure on him to end the nearly two-year old conflict.
The United States has pushed for Assad's departure but Moscow says his removal must not be a pre-condition for any solution of the conflict.
