Sunshine still wary in Champions league

Sunshine Stars are hoping to get their first win in the group stage of the 2012 CAF champions league when they take on Algerian side, ASO Chlef of Algeria in a Group A match on Sunday.
After losing their first match 0-2 at home to Esperance, they went away to Tunis last weekend and held Etoile du Sahel to a 0-0 draw to give the Akure-based side renewed hope in the continental championship.
That away point took them to third on the log and a win this weekend could bring them back into contention for a semi-final ticket.
But Gbenga Ogunbote, coach of the team will not allow his team to get carried away with that away performance.
"We will take this campaign a game at a time," Ogunbote told fifa.com.
"First, we set the target to qualify for the group stage and now we wish to go past that to get to the semi-finals."
And being the only remaining Nigerian side on the continent has added pressure on the team to perform.
"There is a little bit of pressure to perform and do well in the competition," said captain Godfrey Oboabona, who plays for the national team.
"But this pressure is normal, and we have spoken about it amongst ourselves and have accepted this responsibility," Oboabona added.
Sunshine Stars is seeking to join Enyimba FC as the only Nigerian club side to have won the Champions League title.

Davina gets surprise marriage proposal

'I Go Make Am' singer, Davina Achema, received a surprise marriage proposal from long-time boyfriend during the weekend.
Performing alongside other entertainers at an event held to mark the first anniversary of Entertainment Express, the Kogi state singer received the marriage proposal from Eric Nwadinobi, her boyfriend.
Eric stepped on the stage after her performance and brought out a ring and said: "We've known each other for almost three years now and I love everything about you. Please, will you marry me?"
The entire crowd went wild with excitement as a tearful Davina said, "Yes".
The star-studded event, held at the Niteshift Coliseum, Ikeja, had the likes of AY, Elenu, MC Abbey, Enenche D Comedian, Mr. Raw, X Project and Nollywood stars, Stephanie Okereke-Idahosa, Victor Osuagwu, Cynthia Agholor, and Zik Zulu in attendance.
Davina started her music journey by playing in night clubs. She was brought to limelight at the 2005 Star Mega Jamz. The couple hope to announce a wedding date soon.

Turai Yar’adua rejects new land offers

The tussle between first lady, Patience Jonathan, and her predecessor, Turai Yar’adua, over a piece of land located in the Central Business District of Abuja, may be far from over.
An insider said the former first lady has rejected an offer of a new plot in exchange for the contentious property at a meeting that deliberated the proposal on Monday.
Sources had said the former first lady was being offered any other plot of her choice within the Central Business District, as a replacement for the contentious land earlier awarded to Yar’Adua’s Women and Youth Empowerment Foundation (WAYEF), but revoked and given to Jonathan’s African First Ladies’ Peace Mission.
One of the lawyers to WAYEF, Innocent Lagi, confirmed a consensus had not yet been reached; adding that the plots put before Yar’adua were not acceptable. “I can confirm to you that our demands have not been met yet,” he said.
Yar’adua had filed a suit an Abuja High Court challenging the withdrawal, and both sides told the court last Tuesday the matter will be settled out of court.

Reps tackle Okonjo-Iweala

The House of Representatives has dismissed the Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s explanations for the nation’s poor budget performance, re-affirming its impeachment warning to President Goodluck Jonathan over the matter.
Speaking through its spokesperson, Zakari Mohammed, the House accused the finance minister of selective implementation of the budget and said her decision to choose the projects to fund, and to withhold cash, were unlawful.
It also dismissed the Okonjo-Iweala's claim that the performance of the N4.8 trillion budget was slowed down by the constituency projects introduced into the Appropriation Act by the lawmakers.
The budget’s performance, said to be at less than 40 per cent at the close of July, has sparked a new round of controversy between the lawmakers and the executive, with the House threatening to impeach the President for violating the Act.
In the statement issued on Sunday, the House again warned the president to be aware that the budget’s “significant implementation is ultimately in the interest of his presidency.”
“We call on the President, as an elected official who is ultimately accountable to Nigerians, to be careful of the type of advice he gets from his unelected appointees on the issue of implementation of the budget, as its significant implementation is ultimately in the interest of his presidency,” the statement said.
The lengthy remarks which countered points canvassed by the minister, came as a rejoinder to Okonjo-Iweala’s explanation last week rejecting the legislators’ position that the budget be fully implemented.
The minister had said 100 per cent implementation was impossible, but said there will be improvements by the September deadline given by the House.
"It is not within her powers to pick and choose projects and programmes to fund as has been the case with the Appropriation Act 2012,” said Zakari. "Her piece-meal and discretionary release of funds for projects contrary to the schedule approved in the Appropriation Act is unlawful.”
The House rejected the minister’s claim that implementation had jumped from 39 per cent in June to 56 per cent in July; alleging that the actual figure is about 34 per cent.
The lawmakers criticised the minister’s remark that the execution of projects had been affected by the constituency projects introduced into the budget by the National Assembly; adding that such projects accounted for only less than 10 per cent of the entire budget.
They cited the Ministry of Works, with total allocation of N145 billion for capital projects, out of which only N47 billion has so far been released by the executive.
“The projects that need these appropriation are hard core road projects scattered all over the country," said Zakari. "Or are these inter-state highways and other strategic road projects also constituency projects?”

CBN introduces revised Risk-Based Supervision

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), on Friday, announced the introduction of the revised Risk-Based Supervision (RBS), to ensure consolidated risk management in the nation’s banking industry.
Agnes Tokunbo Martins, CBN Director of Banking Supervision, made the announcement in Lagos at the end of the 12th annual national conference of Risk Managers Association of Nigeria (RIMAN).
Martins, who was represented by Caleb Wakama, Deputy Director of Banking Supervision, said that the nation’s recent financial crisis was hinged on inadequate risk management culture, absence of corporate governance, and poor response by supervisors.
She said the need for better supervised and regulated financial institutions invigorated the drive for a risk based approach as a global response to emerging challenges in the financial services industry.
Martins said it was illogical and unprofessional for managers to wait until something happened before acting, stressing that the approach was unhealthy in risk management.
In her paper, titled, 'Risk Based Supervision-The Journey so far and Institutional Preparedness,' she said that CBN was re-defining risk management by expanding its scope and ring-fencing certain areas in the financial institutions operations.
According to her, the CBN required institutions, now and in the future, to strengthen risk management in the areas of capital requirements and creation of capital buffers.
She said that the idea was to engender better evaluation of risks through separate assessment of inherent risks in financial institutions’ activities.
“It is a dynamic forward looking process, placing greater emphasis on early identification of emerging risks/system-wide issues," she added.
Dr. Emmanuel Abolo, RIMAN President, commended CBN for its stride in regulating the financial industry, adding that risk and audit officers of various financial institutions should be independent, to enhance the effectiveness of risk management.
Abolo urged CBN to sustain its professional re-education, seminars and sensitisation programmes for financial institution workers.

OBJ, IBB receive flak over remarks on insecurity

Former head of state, Ibrahim Babangida, and former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, have drawn sharp criticisms for their remarks on Sunday decrying the nation’s insecurity.
The former rulers had said in a rare joint statement that the situation has deteriorated; forcing people to live fear and uncertainty, and threatening the unity of the nation.
They advocated community involvement to all forms of resolution considered by the government and offered to assist in ways they can.
But in a statement, the Conference of Political Parties (CNPP) lambasted the former leaders, accusing them of presiding over corruption that had helped to en-trench the current differences that have stoked violence.
“We wish however to call on Generals Obasanjo and Babaginda to fast-track intensive community involvement by returning the billions of United States Dollars (USD) stolen under their watch,” the group said.
“Accordingly, it is our candid view that if the billions of USD siphoned during the Gulf War Oil Windfall under General Babaginda’s watch and billions of USD fleeced off under General Obasanjo’s watch is returned to the Federation Account, it is enough to fully engage millions of unemployed youths.
It is indisputable that the monies stolen under the two regimes are more than enough to complete the Mambilla Hydro-Power -Plant, Kano-Lagos and Maiduguri-Port Harcourt Modern Rail- lines and two refineries of 500.000 barrels per day capacity. This could have stimulated employment and kept the Boko Haram insurgents, kidnappers and other scoundrels busy. This is real community involvement.”

EFCC Arraigns Three More Oil Marketers for Fraud

Seun Ogunbanbo and Habila Theck in Court.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Monday arraigned two more directors of oil-marketing companies and one oil-marketing and trading (OM&T) firm before a Lagos High Court in Ikeja, for fuel subsidy fraud.
The directors and the company arraigned before Justice Adeniyi Onigbanjo were Oluwaseun Ogunbambo, Habila Theck and Fago Petroleum and Gas Limited.
Their arraignment brings to 21 the number of suspects on trial for the N13 billion fraud perpetrated in the management of the Petroleum Support Fund (PSF).
The EFCC had last week arraigned seven companies and 12 individuals, including Nasaman Oil Services and Axenergy, believed to be owned and run by sons of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains; Ontario Oil & Gas Plc; Nadabo Energy Limited; Pacific Silver Line Limited and Eterna Oil and Gas Plc.
Others who were arraigned included Mamman Nasir Ali, Christian Taylor, Mahmud Tukur, Ochonogor Alex, Walter Wagbatsoma, Adaoha Ugo-Ngadi, Fakuade Babafemi Ebenezer, Ezekiel Olaleye Ejidele, Abubakar Ali Peters, Jude Agube Abalaka, Abdullahi Alao and Oluwaseun Ogunbanbo.
It was, however, gathered that Mamman Nasir, son of the former PDP National Chairman, Col. Ahmadu Ali (rtd), and Mahmud Tukur, son of the incumbent PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, along with other defendants granted bail last week were still in custody yesterday because they could not perfect their bail terms.
The two persons and one company were Monday arraigned on a six-count charge for conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence, forgery and use of false documents.
However, one of the defendants, Olugbenga Adesanya, could not be physically arraigned because he was at large.
The EFCC accused them of fraudulently obtaining N980 million from the Federal Government by falsely representing that the said sum represented subsidy accruing from the importation of 13,627,084 litres of petrol purportedly purchased from Sealac Petroleun Limited and imported into Nigeria through MT Diplomat Ex mT Milleura.
EFCC also alleged that the defendants, with intent to defraud, forged a document titled “Certificate of Origin, Port of Loading Antwerp Belgium” dated October 14, 2011, purporting the document to have been issued by Seatac Petroleum Limited.
Although the commission had earlier preferred a seven-count charge against the defendants, one of the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Francis Usani, applied to the court to drop one of the charges.
According to the EFCC, the offences committed by the defendants is contrary to Section 8 and punishable under Section 1 (1)(2)(3) of the Advanced Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.
Counsel to the defendants, Mr. Babajide Koku (SAN), told the court that they had two applications for the bail of the defendants, one of which was dated July 25, and forwarded to court last week and a new one filed Monday.
Koku held that the application for bail dated July 25 be struck out and for its substitution with the new one.
He said the new application was informed by the need to react to the counter affidavit of the prosecution which had opposed bail for the first defendants.
Reacting, the prosecution, led by Mr. Rotimi Jacobs, told the court that it would have moved the application but it needed time to react to some fundamental issues raised in the new application of the defence which it got Monday.
The defence counsel subsequently asked for a short adjournment to enable the parties to react to all applications before the court.
However, Justice Onigbanjo while adjourning the matter till August 1 to consider the bail application, remanded the defendants in EFCC custody as requested by the commission.
THISDAY checks at the EFCC also revealed that those granted bail last week were still in the custody of the commission as they were unable to meet their bail conditions.
Sources said they would remain in custody until the two courts that granted them bail last week are satisfied that all persons and documents produced as part of the bail conditions meet the specified requirements.

Four Killed in First Boko Haram Attack on Sokoto

Vice President, Namadi Sambo.

Sokoto, the seat of the Caliphate and the home of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), Monday got its first taste of terror attacks as Boko Haram insurgents set of twin bomb blasts in the town and engaged policemen in a gun duel.
The attacks came on a day gunmen, suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists, attacked the family home of Vice-President Namadi Sambo in Zaria, Kaduna State and four suspected terrorists were killed in Kano, the Kano State capital, after a gun duel with the police.
Four persons were confirmed dead and eight policemen injured in the suicidal bomb blasts that rocked the zonal police headquarters of Zone 10, Marna area of Sokoto metropolis and Unguwar Rogo police station.
The blasts led to the death of two suspected suicide bombers, a police corporal and a woman.
Since the wave of terror attacks gripped some Northern states in the last two years, Sokoto has enjoyed relative peace despite a threat last year by Boko Haram to attack the state.
The nearest the state had come to witnessing terror attack was in March when a phalanx of soldiers invaded the town to rescue two foreigners, a Briton, Chris McManus, and an Italian, Franco Lamolinara, kidnapped in May 2011 in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, and were held hostage in Sokoto.
The rescue bid, carried out by Nigerian and British forces, however went awry as the hostages were killed before their rescuers could get to them.
Monday’s bombings triggered pandemonium in the Sokoto metropolis, as residents scampered to safety to avert attacks by the insurgents or getting caught in any crossfire between the terrorists and the police.
THISDAY learnt that the attack occurred simultaneously at the zonal police headquarters and station around 11.30 am when a suspected suicide bomber forced his way into the zonal command headquarters and rammed his car into the premises after he was prevented by the policemen at the gate from gaining entry.
The bomb-laden car exploded immediately on impact and destroyed the administrative building housing the office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Alhaji Mukhtari Ibrahim, heading the zonal command.
The blast also affected the adjacent building to the AIG’s office, while the vehicle of the AIG, who was in the office when the incident occurred, was also damaged. Also destroyed were houses close to the zonal police headquarters.
Although the police said details of the attack on the Unguwar Rogo police station were sketchy, an eyewitness told THISDAY that the suicide bomber detonated the bomb-laden car near the police station when he could not access the station located in a heavily fortified neighbourhood.
Confirming both incidents to reporters, Ibrahim said a suspected suicide bomber drove a Honda Civic car and forced his way into the premises, when he was prevented from gaining entry at the gate.
He said a police corporal, one Samaila, died on the spot along with the suicide bomber, while eight policemen and a passerby were injured.
He appealed to the public to cooperate with the police in order to avert a recurrence.
“We want the public to cooperate with us to prevent such threats and I have already directed other commands to be on alert to ensure that everywhere is guarded appropriately,” Ibrahim said.
He added that the command had commenced investigation into the matter.
However, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kudu Nma, told reporters that the impact of the bomb on the building at the Unguwar Rogo police station was minimal, as the suicide bomber rammed his vehicle into a shop close to the station and died on the spot.
“As you are aware, the impact of the blast at the Unguwan Rogo police station was minimal, as the blast only damaged the shop close to it,” Nma added.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Sani Salisu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, also informed journalists that a hairdresser, who owned a shop close to the police station, was also killed in the blast.
Meanwhile, the roads leading to the zonal police headquarters and Unguwar Rogo station have been barricaded and movement restricted in the areas.
Later in the day as Muslims were getting set to break their fast, Boko Haram gunmen attacked Arkilla police station, Sokoto.
THISDAY gathered that there was exchange of gunshots at about 6.30 pm between the police and the gunmen who invaded the area on motorcycles. It was learnt that the exchange of fire lasted for almost one hour.
Salisu confirmed the incident, saying that no casualty was recorded in the gun battle with the assailants.
Senate President David Mark condemned the serial suicide bomb attacks on the police stations in Sokoto, describing the attacks as an assault on the peaceful coexistence of the people of the state.
He expressed shock at the audacity of the attackers and urged security agencies to evolve a new approach to tackle the menace of terrorism.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publications, Mr. Kola Ologondiyan, Mark recalled that the security agencies had thwarted the activities of the suicide bombers in the past and they could do it again with renewed commitment.
In Zaria Monday, a cobbler was killed and two policemen guarding the residence of the vice-president were injured when unidentified gunmen, suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents, attacked the building.
Eyewitnesses said the three gunmen came on a motorcycle at around 11 am and opened fire on the riot policemen guarding the house. The house is currently under construction after it was razed down during the April 2011 post-election violence.
It was learnt that one of the policemen was shot on the leg, while the other was shot on the hand.
However, the cobbler who was said to be polishing shoes for one of the policemen was hit by a stray bullet and died on the spot.
The injured policemen were said to have been rushed to the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Shika, for treatment.
The Kaduna State Police Command confirmed the incident, adding that the cobbler was killed by a stray bullet following the exchange of gunfire between the policemen and their attackers.
Acting Public Relations Officer of the Kaduna Command, Abubakar Balteh, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the three gunmen were repelled by the policemen on duty.
According to him, “There was an attack, but the house was under construction. The policemen were guarding the house. A cobbler was killed by a stray bullet because of the exchange of fire between the three gunmen and the police. The cobbler died while one of the policemen was shot on the leg.”
A team of security operatives comprising the police, State Security Service (SSS) and armed soldiers were said to have taken over the vicinity preventing both human and vehicular movements around the area. Security agents were said to have begun a manhunt for the culprits.
The presidency also confirmed the attack on the building located on Baba Ahmad Road in Tudun Wada, Zaria. Special Adviser to the Vice-President, Media and Publicity, Mallam Sani Umar, confirmed the incident.
Meanwhile, the police in Kano State have revealed that four suspected terrorists were killed Monday during a gun battle with policemen.
Two of the attackers were gunned down by the police while two, suspected to be suicide bombers out on a mission, died when the explosives strapped to their bodies went off.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, said one of the gunmen was burnt beyond recognition and there was no police or civilian casualty.
According to the police, items recovered at the scene of the incident were three motorcycles, one AK 47 rifle, an assault rifle and 50 rounds of ammunition.
In Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, an aged woman, said to be a widow, was killed by some gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect.
The woman, a cleaner at the Yobe State Police Force headquarters, was killed during an ambush on a vehicle conveying staff of the police headquarters to their office, it was learnt.
The state Police Commissioner, Patrick Egbuniwe, while confirming the incident, said the aged woman was shot alongside a little boy in the ambush.
“They were immediately rushed to the hospital but the old woman was certified dead, while the little boy was treated and discharged,” he said.

Suspect rapes 94-year-old woman

Johannesburg – A man who benefited from President Jacob Zuma’s special remissions programme appeared in court on Thursday for allegedly raping a 94-year-old grandmother.
Spokesman of South African Police Service (SAPS), Col. Vincent Mdunge, told newsmen in Johannesburg that the suspect is “a habitual criminal’’.
He said that the suspect appeared at the New Hanover Magistrate Court on Thursday.
“The woman was raped in her KwaSwayimane home in Emabheleni Ward, at 1.00 a.m. on Saturday.
“Police have been looking for him for another case,” Mdunge said.

Nxele said that the alleged rape was regrettable and sad.(NAN)

How to worship the Nigerian god

The Nigerian god is one. It may have many different manifestations, but it is essentially different sides of the same coin. Sometimes, adherents of the different sides may fight and kill each other. But Nigerians essentially follow the Nigerian god.
This article is for all those who want to become better worshippers. If you are a new or prospective convert, God will bless you for choosing the Nigerian god. This is just how you must worship him.
First, you must understand that being a worshipper has nothing to do with character, good works or righteousness. So the fact that you choose to open every meeting with multiple prayers does not mean that you intend to do what is right. The opening prayer is important. Nothing can work without it. If you are gathered to discuss how to inflate contracts, begin with an opening prayer or two. If you are gathered to discuss how to rig elections, begin with a prayer. The Nigerian god appreciates communication.
When you sneak away from your wife to call your girlfriend in the bathroom, and she asks if you will come this weekend, you must say—in addition to “Yes”—“By God’s grace” or “God willing”. It doesn’t matter the language you use. Just add it. The Nigerian god likes to be consulted before you do anything, including a trip to Obudu to see your lover.
When worshipping the Nigerian god, be loud. No, the Nigerian god is not hard of hearing. It is just that he appreciates your loud fervour, like he appreciates loud raucous music. The Nigerian god doesn’t care if you have neighbours and neither should you. When you are worshipping in your house, make sure the neighbours can’t sleep. Use loud speakers even if you are only two in the building. Anyone who complains must be evil. God will judge such a person.
Attribute everything to the Nigerian god. So, if you diverted funds from public projects and are able to afford that Phantom, when people say you have a nice car, say, “Na God”. If someone asks what the secret of all your wealth is, say, “God has been good to me”. By this you mean the Nigerian god who gave you the uncommon wisdom to re-appropriate public funds.
Consult the Nigerian god when you don’t feel like working. The Nigerian god understands that we live in a harsh climate where it is hard to do any real work. So, if you have no clue how to be in charge and things start collapsing, ask people to pray to God and ask for his intervention.
The Nigerian god loves elections and politics. When you have bribed people to get the Party nomination, used thugs to steal and stuff ballot boxes, intimidated people into either sitting at home or voting for you, lied about everything from your assets to your age, and you eventually, (through God’s grace), win the elections, you must begin by declaring that your success is the wish of God and that the other candidate should accept this will of God. It is not your fault whom the Nigerian god chooses to reward with political success. How can mere mortals complain?
The Nigerian god does not tolerate disrespect. If someone insults your religion, you must look for anyone like them and kill them. Doesn’t matter what you use—sticks, machetes, grenade launchers, IED’s, AK47’s.
The Nigerian god performs signs and wonders. He does everything from cure HIV to High BP. And the Nigerian god is creative: he can teach a person who was born blind the difference between blue and green when the man of god asks, and he can teach a person born deaf instant English. As a worshipper you must let him deliver you because every case of sickness is caused by evil demons and not infections. Every case of barrenness is caused by witches and has no scientific explanation. So instead of hospital, visit agents of the Nigerian god. But the Nigerian god does not cure corruption. Do not attempt to mock him.
If you worship the Nigerian god, you are under no obligation to be nice or kind to people who are not worshippers. They deserve no courtesy.
The Nigerian god is also online. As a worshipper, you are not obliged to be good or decent on Facebook or twitter all week except on Friday and Sunday, both of which the Nigerian god marks as holy. So you may forward obscene photos, insult people, forward lewd jokes on all days except the holy days. On those holy days, whichever applies to you, put up statuses saying how much you are crazy about God.
These days, the Nigerian god also permits tweets and Facebook updates like: "Now in Church" or "This guy in front of me needs to stop dozing" when performing acts of worship.
In all, the Nigerian god is very kind and accommodating. He gives glory and riches and private jets. And if you worship him well, he will immensely bless your hustle.

NDLEA arrests female drug smugglers

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), on Thursday, disclosed that it recently arrested three suspected female drug traffickers for smuggling 4.5kg of narcotics in their underwear and wigs.
A statement signed by the agency's Head of Public Affairs, Ofoyeju Mitchell, revealed that all three suspects were apprehended at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, last weekend.
The suspects are: Anene Iruoma, 26; Obiakor Okwudili, 34; and Ms. Mbechi Susan, 38.
According to Mitchell, Anene and Obiakor, who were on their way to Malaysia, were caught with 3.6kg of methamphetamines neatly hidden in customised underwear and wigs.
The third suspect, Mbechi, who had claimed to be three months pregnant, was found to have ingested 900 grammes of substance that tested positive for cocaine.
The agency's commander at the Abuja Airport, Hamisu Lawan, said the drugs were detected during routine screening of passengers, adding that the suspects had been "co-operating with narcotic officials in the investigation."
Mbechi was said to have been arrested on her way from Sao-Paulo, Brazil, with the aid of scanning machines.
"Mbechi, who claimed to be three months pregnant, later excreted 51 pellets of cocaine weighing 900 grammes," he stated.
In his reaction, the NDLEA Chairman, Ahmadu Giade, said the Agency would provide an enabling environment for a strong and sustainable drug control institution in the country.
“Drug trafficking is criminal and as security managers we have a responsibility to provide the enabling environment for officers and stakeholders to give their best in addressing the drug problem," he stated.
"These and subsequent arrests and drug seizures will further discourage potential drug traffickers that they will caught and prosecuted."
According to the statement, the suspects, who will soon be charged to court, face a 15-year sentence under the NDLEA Act.

CBN orders banks to close foreign subsidiaries

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has ordered Nigerian banks that operate foreign subsidiaries to close them.
A circular issued on Wednesday, by Agnes Martins, the CBN Director of Banking Supervision, said the directive aims to make banks avoid the risk of not meeting the capital base requirements of their host country.
The circular stated that the apex bank will restrict the parent banks from providing the offshore subsidiaries with the funds required to increase their capital base. The offshore subsidiaries that can raise the money unilaterally will be allowed to continue doing business in their host countries, while those that cannot, will be compelled to close shop.
“The CBN has noted with concern the incessant demands on Nigerian banks by the various host regulators for the recapitalisation of foreign subsidiaries,” stated Martins. “These demands have exerted enormous pressure on the capital base of most parent banks due to the lull in the capital market, making it difficult to raise capital, diminishing profit margins and increasing competition. Nigerian banks with foreign subsidiaries are required to submit, within 60 days of the date on this letter, recapitalisation plans in anticipation of regulatory capital increases under BASEL II and III and any other unforeseen increase by host countries.”
The policy will hit UBA and Access Bank hard as they are the two banks with the highest number of foreign subsidiaries; owning 18 and 19 respectively in Africa.

US Poll Shows Persistence of Obama Muslim Lie

up2607212-Michelle-Obama.jpg - up2607212-Michelle-Obama.jpg
First Lady Michelle Obama shakes Reverend Luis Leon's hand while leaving with President Barack Obama and their daughter Sasha after attending Sunday service at St. John's Church

More than one in three conservative Republican voters still thinks US President Barack Obama is a Muslim, nearly four years after he won power, said a Pew Research Center survey.
"The number of Americans who say Obama is a Muslim is up since 2008, similar to 2010," senior Pew researcher Greg Smith told AFP.
Although the number of conservative Republicans who believe Obama is a Muslim stagnated between 2010 and 2012, it has more than doubled since 2008 despite the Christian church-goer's repeated affirmations of his faith.
Seventeen percent of 3,000 overall voters asked by Pew in June and July thought Obama was Muslim, the poll said. That number is up five percent from 2008 and down three percent from 2010, within the survey's margin of error.
"Our polling suggests there's a real partisan component," Smith said.
Muslim American community leaders expressed concern that the lingering inability to recognize Obama's true faith showed a disturbing undercurrent in US politics, indicating a possible rise of Islamophobic discourse.
"For seventeen percent of people to believe Obama is a Muslim shows there's a lot of fear-mongering and politicking in America," Haris Tarin from the Muslim Public Affairs Council.
But Tarin opposes Obama's efforts to "constantly go out of his way to say he's a Christian."
Obama's Kenyan father was born a Muslim, his middle name is Hussein, and he spent years in Muslim-majority Indonesia as a child. Millions of Americans -- particularly Republicans fuelled by conservative bloggers and talk radio hosts -- suspect he is secretly Muslim, according to several polls.
"My Christian faith then has been a sustaining force for me over these last few years, all the more so when Michelle and I hear our faith questioned from time to time," Obama said at the 2011 National Prayer Breakfast, an annual gathering that brings together thousands of religious and community leaders.
Tarin, the director of the Washington office of the Muslim American advocacy group, however said he hoped the poll would not lead to another Obama assertion of faith.
"I hope Obama does not go out of his way to deny he's a Muslim. That reinforces the idea that Islam can be used as a slur," said Tarin.
Tarin noted that former secretary of state under the Republican George W. Bush administration, Colin Powell, dealt a blow to the controversy of Obama's religion, when he asked in an interview on NBC's Meet The Press, "What if Obama is" a Muslim?
Only 49 percent of those polled by Pew correctly identified Obama as a Christian, while another 31 percent said they did not know.
Some 60 percent of voters correctly identified Obama's Republican opponent in the November presidential elections, Mitt Romney, as a Mormon.

Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide
The FESTAC Town Police Division under the Area E Command of the Lagos State Police Command, Thursday arrested two brothers with fresh human parts in the area as they tried  to escape after murdering their victim.
According to police sources,  the brothers were arrested at Third Avenue, B Close based on a tip off.
The suspects reportedly had a human head, hands, legs and some other body parts when they were nabbed.

The police also denied insinuations that about 100 human skulls were found in the hideout of the suspects, the source insisted that it was only parts belonging to a person that was found on the brothers.
Although efforts made to ferret the identities of the suspect proved abortive, THISDAY, however, learnt that they were brothers who were allegedly in the business of supplying human parts for rituals.
When contacted, the Area Commander, Dammian Okoro, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, could not confirm the story although he admitted that the police made some arrests.
He said: "I am not aware that 100 human skulls were found at FESTAC but I know something was found. I am on the way to the office to confirm."
Further attempts made to ferret more information proved abortive as he insisted that he was not in the right position to confirm stories for the reporter rather the police spokesman.
Again when contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said she was aware of the incident, adding that she was waiting for the authentication of the story.
She said: "I have been called in respect of the incident but I cannot say of its 100 human skulls as is being bandied around. I am waiting for them to debrief me and then I can confirm it."
However, when THISDAY called back to still confirm the story, the PRO's lines were no longer available.
The suspects are currently being held at the FESTAC Division pending the outcome of preliminary investigation which would then influence their transfer to the State Criminal and Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba.

Michael Jackson's Mother Denies Kidnap in Family Power Struggle

Michael Jackson's mother, Katherine Jackson

Michael Jackson's three children were given a new guardian on Wednesday in an escalating power struggle within the famous musical family involving the singer's multimillion-dollar estate and the well-being of his elderly mother.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff gave temporary guardianship of the children to their cousin Tito Jackson Jr., 34, at his request, after a chaotic week of conflicting reports over the health and whereabouts of family matriarch Katherine Jackson, reports Reuters.
Hours after Wednesday's court hearing, Katherine Jackson gave her first TV interview since the often wild and conflicting reports surfaced, denying she had been kidnapped by her adult children and saying she was devastated that Prince Michael, 15, Paris, 14 and Blanket, 10, "have been taken away from me."
Katherine Jackson, 82, who was appointed guardian of the kids in her son Michael's will, was reported missing and unreachable by granddaughter Paris last week.
She was later said by family members to be resting under doctor's order at the Arizona home of one of her daughters.
"There are rumours going around about me that I have been kidnapped," she told ABC News in the interview.
"I am here today to let everybody to know that I am good and fine ... My children would never do anything to me like that," she added.
Katherine Jackson said the court ruling that gave temporary guardianship to her grandson Tito was "based on a bunch of lies."
"I am devastated that while I've been away, my grandchildren have been taken away from me, and I'm coming home," she added.
The family dispute broke into the open earlier this week in an angry confrontation, seen on security video, between Paris and her aunt, singer Janet Jackson, at the clan's large compound near Los Angeles.
Janet Jackson and four of her siblings are embroiled in a dispute over the validity of the will left by their brother Michael after his sudden death in 2009. The will placed his estate in the hands of two non-family executors.
At Wednesday's court hearing, attorneys for both Tito Jackson Jr. and Katherine Jackson raised questions over whether her absence from her Los Angeles home was voluntary.
Tito Jackson Jr., the son of Michael Jackson's older brother Tito, told Beckloff that he spoke on Tuesday to Katherine Jackson but that she was talking strangely and seemed to be speaking in code.
"I never heard my grandmother talk like that," he said. "I'd ask simple questions and she wasn't sharp."
Another brother, Randy Jackson, said on Twitter Wednesday that suggestions his mother was being held against her will were "absurd."
"Enough already!! We've already lost one family member," Randy Jackson tweeted, claiming the executors of his brother's estate were using the media to "spin their lies and divide our family."
Michael Jackson's will stipulated that money earned by the estate would benefit his mother and his kids. But Randy, Janet and three other siblings say the pop star's signature was forged and that he was not in California on the date it was signed.
The executors of the estate insist the will is valid and said earlier this week they were concerned about protecting the kids from "undue influences, bullying and greed."

With New Inventions, Army Aims to Check Terror Attacks

Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika

Senator Iroegbu
There is no better proof of the fact that necessity is the mother of invention than the effort by  the Nigerian Army to find local solutions to the scourge of Boko Haram, which has unleashed terrorism on Nigeria.  The army has become ingenious in designing and creating counter tools and equipment to stave off Boko Haram terrorist attacks.

Thursday, the army authorities unveiled the new anti-bombing device, which it manufactured locally as part of its efforts to tackle the internal security challenge confronting the nation. The army had recently also built Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC) locally as well as other war protective gear like bulletproof vests, among other devices.
The facilities were inaugurated by President Goodluck Jonathan during the 2012 Army Day celebration in Kaduna State, a few weeks ago.
Its latest device was presented yesterday to members of the public and distributed through representatives of Christian and Muslim organisations at the army headquarters, Abuja by the Chief of Civil-Military Relations, Maj-Gen. Bitrus Kwaji. The idea is to put the device to test in worship centres, which have persistently come under attacks by the religious insurgents.
Kwaji said the successful production of the anti-bombing device called "Vehicle Stopper" is a by-product of the vision of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, who charged all corps and services of the Nigerian Army to provide ways and means of curtailing the security menace in the country.
He said: "The unfolding security challenges confronting the nation, amongst which is the Boko Haram terrorist menace, have continued to hinder the progress of the transformation agenda of Mr. President as well as the development of the nation at large.
"The terrorists over the years have continued to attack places of worship (churches and mosques) in order to destabilise the nation. This has necessitated the COAS to charge all corps and services of the Nigerian Army to provide ways and means of curtailing this menace."
"This has yielded a lot of responses as we witnessed the commissioning of an indigenous APC by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces during the recently concluded Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) in Kaduna State," he added.
Kwaji further stated: "In both large and small measures, personnel of the Nigerian Army have taken the COAS charge to heart looking at various ways and means of curtailing insecurity.
"Today, we are gathered here to introduce to you a “Vehicle Stopper,” a device so unique that it can stop any vehicle that comes in contact with it from any direction or angle. Though, this invention is simple the effect is great."
The Chief of Civil-Military Relations noted that the invention has become necessary since the terrorists mainly use vehicles loaded with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
"It has been discovered that most attacks of suicide bombers are being carried out with vehicles loaded with IEDs. The mode of operation is simple as a suicide bomber drives straight into his target and explosion occurs,"  he explained.
He emphasised that as part of the Nigerian Army's corporate social responsibility, some of the tools are being distributed to  churches and mosques which could in turn decide to make more, since the technology is very simple to understand.
"It is the hope of the COAS, that all hands be on deck to safeguard the lives and property of law-abiding citizens in the country, as I am to remind you that security is everybody's business," he said.
The Head of the Engineering Team that produced the latest device  who also the Director of Policy, Nigerian Army, Maj-Gen Richard Chioba, explained that the equipment will help reduce car bombings.
Chioba who also led the engineering team that manufactured the first indigenous APC assured the gathering that the innovation will help forestall and immobilise vehicles used for suicide bombings, especially at worship centres.
He said: "In order to disallow bombers from reaching their targets, this invention comes in handy as it forcibly stops any vehicle that comes in contact with it at whatever speed.
"This is the second innovation of the Nigerian Army in its effort to stop the menace of terrorist activities in places of worship."
Meanwhile, the religious leaders, including the Deputy Secretary, National Mosque, Mallam Ibrahim Jega and representative of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Canon John Paul, collected the new device on behalf of Muslims and Christians respectively.
They both commended the efforts of the Nigerian Army towards taming insecurity in the country.

A senator’s anual salary          = over N182 million
multiply by 109 senators (don’t forget the House of rep, ministers, ambassadors,  …)
In addition to the regular and legitimate salaries and allowances of over N17 million ($113,333) and N14.99 million ($99,933) which senators and reps were collecting yearly and the irregular allowance of estacodes, duty tours etc, they were also collecting over N192m ($1.28m) and N140m ($0.93m) respectively in illicit quarterly allocation which is not provided for by RMAFC.
Effectively, a Nigerian senator was taking home at least $1.40m ($1.28m quarterly allocations + $0.113m regular salaries and allowances) as against the $0.174m an American senator takes home hence a Nigeria senator earns at least 8 times as much as an American senator and more than 3 times the American president.
Whereas a Senator in the U.S earns N21, 146,000, the same as a member of the House of Representatives; a UK Member of Parliament earn £64,766 (N14, 896,180)
In other words, a Federal Legislator in Nigeria is paid more than double what a Member of British Parliament earns per annum.
Senate President David Mark alone takes N250 million quarterly or N83.33 million per month. Senate Deputy President Ike Ekweremadu gets N150 million per quarter or N50 million a month.
Mark and Ekweremadu earns in 4 months, six times what the UK Prime Minister earns in a year. David Cameron goes home with £190,000 per anum (N43, 700,000)
In a newspaper news article entitled ‘An Assembly for looting’ written by Musikilu Mojeed with Elor Nkereuwem, the authors rightly claimed that each of the 360 members of the House of Representatives were getting N35 million in cash money in quarterly allocation while each of the 109 Senators pockets N48 million each. These allocations have however been slashed by 20% to N27 million ($180,000) and N38 million ($253,333) respectively due to the 20% reduction requested by the late president.

Romney meets with Tony Blair, declines to criticize Obama

Romney tours an art exhibition with British Foreign Secretary William Hague (Charles Dharapak/AP)
LONDON—Mitt Romney kicked off the second day of his overseas tour by meeting with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, the first in a series of discussions aimed at bolstering his foreign policy resumé. But he reiterated Thursday he will not criticize President Barack Obama or his policies while he's traveling overseas this week.
"While I am on foreign soil, I'm very careful not to be critical of my own government's policies," Romney told reporters during a later meeting with Labour Party leader Ed Miliband. "I would be even more remiss if I were to be critical of any other government's policies. I will instead look forward to an exchange of ideas."
Miliband was the second of six meetings Romney was scheduled to hold Thursday with top British officials on day two of his weeklong trip overseas. Earlier Thursday morning, Romney sat down with Blair, but the public aspect of their meeting didn't reveal much. The two leaders made small talk about the Olympics and the weather during the few minutes reporters were allowed to observe the meeting.
"Any favorite sporting events you look forward to attending, or not really?" Romney asked Blair, as reporters observed the men at Blair's office in Westminster.
"The British have now become very focused on cycling," Blair replied. "So there will be a lot of interest in that."
Romney ignored a question from his traveling press corps about what "message" he aimed to send back to voters in the United States with his meetings here. But aides have described the trip as a "listen and learn" expedition—one aimed at boosting Romney's foreign policy credentials with voters back home.
A Romney aide told reporters afterwards that the GOP candidate talked to Blair, who serves as a special envoy to the Middle East for the Quartet, about issues in that region, including Iran and Syria. The same topics came up during Romney's meeting with Miliband—as did the Boston Red Sox, according to a Romney aide, who did not elaborate on the baseball conversation.
Afterwards, Romney toured a local art exhibition with British Foreign Secretary William Hague, where the two discussed Syria and other foreign hot spots—as well as "their mutual love of Kit Kat bars," according to an aide who spoke on background about the meeting. On Thursday afternoon, Romney is scheduled to sit down with two more top British officials: Prime Minister David Cameron and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.
On Thursday night, he's supposed to headline a fundraiser on his campaign's behalf in London's swank Mayfair neighborhood. Tickets to the event reportedly ranged as high as $75,000 a person, with proceeds going to the Romney Victory Fund—a joint account of the Romney campaign, the Republican National Committee and several state parties.
